Boosting Translation Accuracy with MediaCAT’s Glossaries Feature

When it comes to localization, accuracy is everything. That’s why MediaCAT, XL8’s cloud-based localization platform, is designed to streamline workflows by integrating proprietary AI engines for speech-to-text (STT) and machine translation (MT). While AI has made incredible strides, human post-editing and quality control (QC) remain essential - for now. That’s why we emphasize a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) approach.

That said, our goal is to minimize the amount of editing needed. One way to improve AI output is through continuous engine training, but that takes time. Sometimes, you need a solution that delivers immediate improvements. Enter MediaCAT’s Glossaries feature - a powerful tool that enhances both transcription and translation accuracy right away.

How Do Glossaries Work in MediaCAT?

We’ve previously discussed how Glossaries improve Sync, MediaCAT’s speech-to-text feature, by increasing transcription accuracy. If you missed that post, you can check it out here.

Today, we’ll explore how the Glossaries Feature optimizes the Translate function.

Glossaries are particularly useful when working with proper nouns, industry-specific terms, or brand names that require consistent translation. Unlike basic term lists, Glossaries support both single words and short phrases. However, while single words will always match, phrase-based glossary entries may not always yield an exact paired translation due to contextual variations.

Setting Up Your Glossaries

Using the Glossaries feature in MediaCAT is simple. Provide a term list in both source and target languages either by:

  1. Entering the terms directly in the MediaCAT UI, which looks and functions like an Excel spreadsheet.
  2. Uploading a CSV file containing your predefined term pairs.

Once uploaded, the Glossaries act as a reference dictionary for our AI engine. When the engine encounters a source term listed in your Glossary, it automatically replaces it with the paired target translation - ensuring consistency and accuracy in every output.

Why Use Glossaries for Translation?

  • Instant improvement in translation accuracy
  • Ensures consistency across projects
  • Reduces post-editing workload
  • Easily customizable to fit your localization needs

By leveraging the Glossaries feature, you gain more control over translation quality while allowing AI to work more efficiently. It’s a simple yet powerful way to achieve better results without waiting for long-term engine training improvements.

This Is What It Looks Like in Action!

Let’s compare translation results for French to English. In this example, we’re translating a sentence that includes the name ‘Aimé.’

Without the Glossaries feature enabled, the translation looks like this:

However, if we want ‘Aimé’ to be translated as ‘Amy’ in English, we can simply add the term to the Glossaries in MediaCAT, as shown below:

Once the Glossaries feature is applied to the project, the updated translation looks like this:
